Wine Stop DTLA

Who We Are

Since 2016, Wine Stop has been proud to call the Arts District home. What began as a small neighborhood wine shop has grown into three community-focused spaces across Los Angeles—in the Arts District in DTLA, Silver Lake, and Echo Park.

We believe wine is about people first.

We work directly with small, responsible wineries that care for their land, their workers, and their communities. We visit our growers, taste with them, walk their vineyards, and remain connected beyond the transaction.

The relationships matter as much as the wine.

We do not build our shelves around distributor portfolios, marketing campaigns, scores, or famous labels.

We build them around growers.

Places, Not Products

Wine is a place—not simply a product.

A grape grown on slate beside the Mosel does not express itself in the same way when planted somewhere else. Sangiovese should not taste like Nebbiolo. Carmenère should not be reduced to a familiar collection of marketable flavors.

The grape, soil, climate, vintage, farming, and decisions of the grower all shape what eventually reaches the glass.

Many wines are created as products: designed to taste familiar, appeal to the widest possible audience, and repeat the same experience year after year.

We look for something different.

We look for wines that express where they come from, who made them, and why they could not have been produced in exactly the same way anywhere else.

We carry places—not products.

Transparency Matters

Transparency matters to us.

We ask questions. We request organic certificates. We review laboratory analyses. We care about how wines are farmed, fermented, bottled, and shipped.

When a wine says it is organic, sustainable, natural, or low-intervention, we want to understand what that claim actually means—and see the documentation when appropriate.

Our mission is simple: honest wines with honest information.

Curated With Experience

Every bottle on our shelves is personally selected by Alvaro Cardenas, drawing on more than 25 years of professional tasting experience and a deep commitment to well-made, place-driven wines.

We champion small producers, indigenous grape varieties, lesser-known appellations, and wines that deserve to be discovered.

A wine does not have to match our personal preferences to be excellent. It must be clean, balanced, varietally correct, expressive of its origin, and made with care.

That is the standard behind every Wine Stop selection.

We Guarantee the Quality.
You Discover the Wine.

Most wine shops and publications tell you which flavors you are expected to find before the wine reaches your glass.

We take a different approach.

Flavor descriptions can influence what you expect to experience. They can cause someone to reject a wine because they dislike strawberries, green apples, herbs, or spices—even though a wine described with those words does not literally taste like the fruit or spice itself.

Wine should be discovered, not predicted.

We give you the information that helps you understand the wine: where it comes from, which grapes were used, how it was farmed and made, its structure, its style, and why we selected it.

We do not tell you which flavors to look for before you taste.

Taste the wine first. Notice its texture, structure, movement, and what it reminds you of. Form your own impressions. Our tasting notes can then be provided after purchase so you can compare our observations with yours.

There is no single correct answer.

The purpose is to build your own palate, expand your taste range, and experience each wine on its own terms.

We guarantee the quality. You discover the wine.

Built for Discovery

Our shops are built for discovery.

Ask questions. Taste something unfamiliar. Explore a new grape, region, or style. Stay awhile.

At our Silver Lake location, Quartino & Pintxos brings that spirit to life—a relaxed tasting bar where neighbors gather over wines by the glass, quartino, or bottle.

Whether you are picking up a dependable weeknight bottle, discovering a grape you have never tasted, exploring natural wine for the first time, or looking for something special, we are here for it.

We are a neighborhood wine shop—in three neighborhoods.

What We Believe

The Wine Stop Manifesto

1. Wine is a place—not a product.

It is the expression of people, grapes, land, climate, vintage, and time.

2. Great wine begins in the vineyard.

Respect for the soil, vines, environment, and people who work the land comes first.

3. Growers matter more than brands.

We follow the hands behind the wine—not marketing campaigns, scores, or advertising budgets.

4. Transparency matters.

When a wine makes a claim, we ask questions and look for proof.

5. Honest wines deserve honest information.

Farming, fermentation, production, and origin should never be hidden.

Transparency does not excuse faults. Our wines must be clean, precise, and free of funk and stink.

6. Quality comes before preference.

You may not personally love every grape, region, or style. That does not make it a bad wine.

We select wines that are well-made, balanced, varietally correct, and expressive of their origin.

7. Character over uniformity.

We choose wines with identity—not wines designed to taste like everything else on the shelf.

8. Every wine is driven by something.

From a Place. By Process. Or Easy & Familiar.

We make that visible so you can understand what shaped the wine and choose with greater clarity.

9. Taste first. Read later.

We tell you where the wine comes from, how it was made, its structure, and why we selected it.

We do not tell you which flavors to find before you taste it.

Form your own impressions first. Then compare them with ours.

10. Discovery is the joy of wine.

Every grape, region, and bottle is an opportunity to expand your taste—not simply repeat what you already know you like.

11. Wine is meant to be shared.

Around tables, between friends, across cultures, and through generations.

We Guarantee the Quality. You Discover the Wine.
