Mosel, Germany
100% Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) · Trocken*

A rare Mosel red from the historic Wintricher Großes Herrgott vineyard overlooking the village of Wintrich. Steep, slate-rich slopes—better known for Riesling—give this Pinot Noir a fine mineral edge rarely associated with the grape.

The parcel was planted in 1999, relatively mature by Mosel standards—and remarkable considering red wine was effectively banned here until the late 1980s. This was the estate’s first red parcel, making it as much a milestone as a vineyard.

Production is extremely limited: about 1,200 bottles.

* Wine Term: Trocken

German for “dry.” Minimal residual sugar—so grape, soil, and vintage speak clearly.

Why Try It?

Because Mosel Pinot Noir tells a story few regions can match.

The 2020 vintage is elegant and quietly expressive—red cherry, wild raspberry, subtle spice—framed by a fine slate-driven backbone.

Aged 36 months in used oak barriques, it gains depth and texture without losing clarity.

The result is Pinot Noir that feels both classic and unexpected—rooted in place.

Why Buy It?

Historic Wintricher Großes Herrgott site
Mosel Pinot Noir—rare and still emerging
Only ~1,200 bottles produced
36 months in used oak (structure, not oak flavor)
Pinot elegance with Mosel minerality

A compelling bottle for anyone curious about the quiet return of red wine to the Mosel.

A Short Note on Mosel Red Wine

Red wine once existed along the Mosel but largely disappeared after a 1787 decree by the Archbishop of Trier, who ordered growers to focus on Riesling. By the late 19th century, top Mosel Rieslings rivaled—and sometimes exceeded—Bordeaux in price.

A second prohibition in 1933 effectively eliminated red plantings. Only in the late 1980s was the ban lifted, allowing Spätburgunder to return.

Today, small parcels like this represent a quiet revival—proof that even the most defined regions still have more to say.
