This is a rare Mosel red from the historic Wintricher Großes Herrgott vineyard overlooking the village of Wintrich.

The Mosel is one of the world’s great Riesling regions, but this bottle tells another part of its story. Made entirely from Spätburgunder—the German name for Pinot Noir—it comes from steep, slate-rich slopes where red wine was effectively prohibited until the late 1980s.

The parcel was planted in 1999 and was the estate’s first red-wine vineyard. Production is extremely limited.

This is why we place it under From a Place. The grape matters. The winemaking matters. But the reason this wine exists—and the reason it is so unusual—begins with one vineyard in the Mosel.

Why We Selected It

Wine Stop selected this Spätburgunder because it offers a rare opportunity to experience Pinot Noir through the landscape and history of the Mosel.

The wine comes from a single, steep vineyard planted on slate-rich soils above Wintrich. It was aged for 36 months in used oak barriques, allowing the wine to develop structure and texture without covering the character of the grape or vineyard with new-oak flavor.

Only approximately 1,200 bottles were produced.

This is not Pinot Noir made to imitate Burgundy or another established red-wine region. It is an emerging expression of what Spätburgunder can become in the Mosel.

Because Mosel Spätburgunder tells a story that Riesling cannot tell on its own.

For centuries, the region became increasingly defined by white wine. The return of red grapes is recent, limited and still developing.

Wine Term: ‘Trocken’

Trocken is the German term for “dry.”

On a German wine label, it indicates that the wine has been fermented to a legally defined dry level rather than retaining the more noticeable sweetness found in some traditional German wine styles.

In this Spätburgunder, trocken identifies a dry red wine in which the grape, vineyard, vintage and winemaking remain clearly expressed.

A Short Note on Mosel Red Wine

Red wine once existed along the Mosel but largely disappeared after a 1787 decree by the Archbishop of Trier, who ordered growers to focus on Riesling.

That decision helped establish the Mosel’s international reputation. By the late 19th century, its greatest Rieslings rivaled—and sometimes exceeded—Bordeaux wines in price.

A second prohibition in 1933 effectively eliminated the region’s remaining red-wine plantings. Only in the late 1980s was the ban lifted, allowing growers to plant Spätburgunder again.

Today, small parcels such as this one represent a quiet revival. They demonstrate that even one of the world’s most historically defined wine regions still has more to say.
